(Song Analysis) Third Eye Blind - Wounded

The guy who put his hands on you,
has got nothing to do with me.
And the bruises that you feel will heal,
and I hope you come around,
'cause we're missing you.

You used to speak so easy,
now you're afraid to talk to me.
It's like walking with the wounded,
carrying that weight way too far,
the concrete pulled you down so hard.
Out there with the wounded,
we're missing you.

Well I never claimed to understand,
what happens after dark,
but my fingers catch the sparks,
at the thought of touching you,
when you're wounded.

Let me break it down 'til I force the issue,
we miss your face and you know I wish you,
would come back down the the Delva Bar,
you tell 'em, "that's just my battle scar."
I wanna kiss you, and knock 'em down like we used to,
you're marigold.
'Til you're walking around shaking that a** again,
then you walk on, baby, walk on, you walk on,
on and on.
You're an angel in the pit with your hands in the air,
and we're missing you.

Now it's fall and your shoulders get tighter,
nervous flicks on your lighter... boots.
Your pissed off poets,
your women's groups,
and the friends with you, we should've known this fool,
well I guess we missed the mark.
Still my fingers catch the sparks at the thought of,
them touching you,
now you're wounded.

Let me break it down 'till I force the issue,
you never come around and you know we miss you.
Well, nobody took your pride away,
I said, "that's something people say."
Back down the bully to the back of the bus,
'cause it's time for them to be scared of us,
'till you're yelling how we're living 'cause you got the ball,
and then you rock on, baby, rock on, you rock on,
on and on.
You're a summertime hottie with your socks in the air,
you're screaming, I don't care, baby, I don't care, no!
You say you don't know, you say you don't know,
all I know is we're missing you.
You say you don't know, you say you don't know,
all I know is we're missing you, you.
Show up, show up wounded.
Show up, show up wounded.

Wounded by Third Eye Blind is an alternative rock song written by the lead singer of the group, Stephan Jenkins. Third Eye Blind in an american rock band from San Francisco, California and have written five albums. Wounded is off of their second album, Blue, and is said by Stephan to be one of their best songs they had written.
Wounded is composed, though not full, of poetic devices. Objectification is used throughout the song, for example "Well, nobody took your pride away". This line is giving pride a physical being, it is said that it can be taken away, stolen, as if it is owned like a keepsake. "The concrete pulled you down so hard" is another example of objectification, concrete is being given the ability to physically pull the main character down, wounding her much like the song suggests. There is also a metaphor that is used throughout the piece "well, my fingers catch the spark". The spark that the narrator's fingers catch symbolizes the anger he feels towards the man that hurt his friend, whenever he hears about what he did to her he is angers, thus causing his fingers to catch "the spark".
Wounded is a story told through the eyes of a friend of a girl who has been sexually, and physically, abused. The narrator is angered at the thought of knowing their friend has been put into such an awful situation and is trying to bring them out of the depression that she has found herself in. She is taking the events hard and no longer leaves her home to go and see her friends. The narrator thinks that because this girl has become a recluse, she will ruin her life. The narrator goes on to tell that, yes, he is extremely angry about what happened, but she does not need to lock herself up because of it, her friends are there to help, support and protect her through everything that is happening.
Wounded, though a song based around a harrowing topic, is very uplifting. It shows that everyone has friends out there willing to help them through their hardest time, even if they cannot see it themselves. Third Eye Blind did an exceptional job on composing the song to not be something that would be hard to listen to, like most books/songs/movies are when they display such subject manner. I would highly recommend this song, and band, to anyone.
